Special Olympics

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition to more than 1.7 million people with intellectual disabilities in more than 150 countries.  Helen Keller School (HKS) has been sending teams to Special Olympics events since the 1980s.  Depending on our students, we may have teams in basketball, bowling, golf, track and field, volleyball, powerlifting or other sports.  Our powerlifting team has won numerous competitions, traveling as far as Scotland to participate in world-class events.

“Children…who participate in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image. They grow mentally, socially and spiritually and, through their activities, exhibit boundless courage and enthusiasm, enjoy the rewards of friendship and ultimately discover not only new abilities and talents but their voices as well.” – Special Olympics
