Alabama School for the Blind’s (ASB) Instructional Resource Center for the Blind (AIRCB) provides Braille and large print books, materials and other services to all students in Alabama who are blind or have low vision – at AIDB and in public schools. AIRCB also operates a Braille and large print production service for textbooks, manuals or other printed resources requested by colleges, businesses and individuals.
Large print and Braille books are purchased from special media vendors and checked out to students who are blind or who have low vision for the length of the school year, then redirected to another student or school system as needed. When Braille and large print books are not available for purchase from these special media vendors, they are produced at the AIRCB. In FY 2012, the AIRCB processed 1233 Braille textbooks and print/Braille books; 3141 large print texts; 779 tests and equipment items; 140 professional materials; 995 supply orders; and 31 electronic texts for a grand total of 6319 orders placed by public and private schools and agencies serving individuals who are blind or have low vision.
AIRCB also functions as a lending library for Braille and large print books, recordings and descriptive videos for blind adults in the area.
