Bailey-Harris Construction CEO Allen Harris in Auburn will host a ‘Believing in What Can Be’ Art Showcase, featuring the extraordinary works by students at Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind on Thursday, October 13.
Founded in 1858, Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the nation’s most comprehensive education and service programs for children and adults who are deaf, blind, deafblind, multidisabled and their families. AIDB serves more than 24,000 individuals each year from birth to aging through the Alabama School for the Deaf, Alabama School for the Blind, Helen Keller School, Gentry Technical Facility and Alabama Industries for the Blind. Regional centers are located in Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Talladega, Tuscaloosa and Tuscumbia.
At AIDB, students of all ages learn to overcome communication and accessibility challenges to become masters of technology, art, the sciences, independent living and productive employees in their home communities.
Through AIDB’s Montgomery-Auburn Regional Center, approximately 3,000 deaf and blind children, adults and seniors receive services directly in their home counties of Autauga, Bullock, Butler, Chambers, Crenshaw, Dallas, Elmore, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike, Russell, Tallapoosa and Wilcox. The Center, located at 432 E. Jefferson Street in Montgomery, features an Early Intervention program; an assistive technology lab; interpreter services and sign language classes; job coaching, personal living skills and a host of other programs and services. Jenny Savage is Regional Director – the phone number is 334-262-0824.
Arts and technology are key aspects of the AIDB curriculum in addition to academic and vocational training, college preparation, athletics and leadership development. Creative instruction and expression includes music, drama and various art forms of art. The winners of the 2016 AIDB Art Competition will be displayed in the exhibit created by students who are deaf, blind and multidisabled. A short program featuring AIDB President Dr. John Mascia will begin at approximately 6:00 p.m.
Allen Harris and Antonio Calloway who serve on the AIDB Foundation Board of Directors are from the Auburn-Montgomery area.
The Art Showcase is being sponsored by the AIDB Foundation, created in 1980 to encourage support of AIDB’s charitable, educational, research and training programs. The Foundation provides funding for a vast array of programs and projects at AIDB including major construction and renovation of facilities, development of new and expanding programs and experiences in professional development, academics, student life, outreach, and the arts.
