Statewide White Cane Day Celebration is Saturday
On Saturday, October 24, 2015, the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) and the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation (ADRS) are hosting the third annual statewide White Cane Day Celebration.
This a celebration of independence for people who are Blind (symbolized by the white cane). The white cane is not just a symbol but it is a tool used for identification and safe independent travel. People who are Blind are empowered by the freedom that the white cane affords them, much as a wheelchair empowers people who cannot walk.
The day’s events will begin at 10 a.m. with a walk starting from the AIDB Huntsville Regional Center (600 Saint Clair Ave. BLDG #2) and concludes in Big Springs Park East with educational and inspirational performances and exhibits.
The feature exhibits will be of tactile art created in Huntsville, so that people who are blind can experience art. We also want people who are not blind to have an experience. So we will blindfold participants and allow them to do art. We are planning a Celebrity Art Challenge. These tactile canvases will be painted under blindfold and the winner will be determined by anonymous voting. We are also proud to host the Inaugural Miss White Cane of Alabama Pageant!
The entire day is meant to raise awareness of the abilities people who are Blind. We are expecting about 150 people from Mobile, Montgomery, Talladega, Birmingham and the Shoals.
Registration is free!
